Dr. Wendy Garvin Mayo

Abstract

Emotional exhaustion, chronic stress, and increasing mental load continue to affect individuals across professional, caregiving, leadership, and community environments. The WenWell™ Wellness Retreat model was developed through the Connecticut Nurse Wellness Project (CTNWP) as an immersive wellness experience designed to strengthen emotional awareness, connection, mindfulness, and personal reflection through structured facilitator-led activities. This publication summarizes outcomes from the inaugural WenWell™ Wellness Retreat conducted with members of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. Participants engaged in guided activities centered on emotional awareness, reflection, breathwork, wellness assessment, journaling, affirmation practices, and symbolic release exercises. Pre- and post-retreat WenWell™ Wellness Index scores demonstrated a measurable increase in perceived wellness, and qualitative reflections highlighted themes related to emotional clarity, self-reflection, joy, connection, and community support.

Introduction

Stress, emotional fatigue, and psychological overload have become increasingly common across healthcare, leadership, educational, and community environments. Individuals are often expected to continuously perform, care for others, manage competing responsibilities, and maintain emotional resilience while navigating personal and professional challenges.

Despite growing awareness surrounding mental health and wellness, opportunities for intentional reflection, emotional processing, and community-centered healing often remain limited. Many individuals function within environments where productivity is prioritized while emotional restoration and self-awareness receive less structured attention.

Wellness and emotional well-being are increasingly recognized as essential components of sustainable workforce and community health. Emotional intelligence frameworks similarly emphasize the importance of self-awareness, emotional regulation, interpersonal connection, and reflective practice in supporting overall well-being and resilience.

The WenWell™ Wellness Retreat model was developed to intentionally create psychologically safe and restorative spaces where participants can pause, reflect, reconnect, and strengthen emotional awareness through guided experiences grounded in wellness, mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and community engagement.

The inaugural retreat, facilitated through the Connecticut Nurse Wellness Project (CTNWP), was conducted with members of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. and represented the first implementation of the WenWell™ Wellness Retreat experience.

Purpose of the WenWell™ Wellness Retreat

The purpose of the WenWell™ Wellness Retreat was to provide participants with a structured and intentional space for reflection, emotional awareness, connection, and wellness-centered engagement.

The retreat was designed to support emotional reflection, stress awareness, mindfulness, psychological restoration, connection, and intentional self-assessment.

Grounded in the WenWell™ framework, the retreat emphasized wellness through guided activities focused on stress management, emotional intelligence, reflection, mindfulness, affirmation, and community dialogue.

Retreat Overview

Organization: Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.

Initiative: Connecticut Nurse Wellness Project.

Program: WenWell™ Wellness Retreat.

Participants: 8 Members.

Facilitator: Dr. Wendy Garvin Mayo.

Retreat Structure: The retreat incorporated multiple guided wellness experiences including stress management and emotional intelligence education, wellness reflection exercises, emotional intelligence self-assessment, breathwork and mindfulness, reflective journaling and drawing, affirmation and symbolic giving ceremonies, and intentional release activities.

Stress Management and Emotional Intelligence

The retreat began with a facilitated discussion centered on stress management and emotional intelligence. Participants explored how stress influences emotional well-being, the impact of stress on relationships and decision-making, and the role emotional intelligence plays in emotional regulation and self-awareness.

Participants additionally completed reflective wellness exercises designed to help identify areas where they felt they were thriving and areas where they felt they were surviving. These exercises encouraged intentional reflection regarding emotional wellness, balance, and personal growth.

Participants also completed an Emotional Intelligence self-assessment to increase awareness of interpersonal dynamics, emotional regulation, and personal insight.

Breathwork and Mindfulness

Participants engaged in a guided mindfulness and breathwork exercise supported by aromatherapy and grounding techniques.

The session incorporated a structured 4-4-4-4 breathing technique in which participants practiced breathing in for four seconds, holding for four seconds, exhaling for four seconds, and holding again for four seconds.

Participants were encouraged to intentionally breathe in what they desired more of in their lives while releasing what they no longer wished to carry emotionally or mentally. This activity created space for grounding, emotional reset, mindfulness, and intentional reflection.

Reflective Drawing and Journaling

Participants engaged in a guided reflective drawing and journaling experience inspired by Hoʻoponopono reflection practices.

Through structured prompts, participants reflected on meaningful life experiences, emotions, relationships, and personal growth.

The activity encouraged both individual insight and collective dialogue while creating opportunities for emotional expression and connection within the group environment.

Giving and Receiving Ceremony

One of the most meaningful retreat experiences was the Giving and Receiving Ceremony honoring the founders of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.

Participants received a card representing one of the founders, an inspirational word or quote connected to the founder's legacy, and symbolic beads associated with themes such as balance, voice, and peace.

Participants reflected on the meaning of their assigned message before moving throughout the room offering beads to fellow attendees while recipients verbally acknowledged the exchange by stating: “I receive it.”

The ceremony created a powerful experience centered on affirmation, intention, emotional support, and collective connection.

Release Ceremony

The retreat concluded with a symbolic release ceremony focused on intentional emotional letting go.

Participants reflected on what they were releasing and what they were taking with them from the retreat experience.

After sharing reflections with the group, participants tore apart the cards representing what they wished to release and placed the pieces into a bowl of water, symbolizing emotional release and renewal. The activity reinforced intentional reflection, emotional processing, and personal restoration.

WenWell™ Wellness Index Measurement

Participants completed the WenWell™ Wellness Index both before and after the retreat experience.

The WenWell™ Wellness Index is a reflective wellness measurement tool designed to assess perceived well-being across domains related to emotional awareness, psychological safety, connection, balance, energy, and personal capacity.

The pre-retreat assessment provided a baseline measure of participant wellness perception prior to engaging in retreat activities, while the post-retreat assessment reflected participants' emotional state following the wellness experience.

Quantitative Outcomes

WenWell™ Wellness Index Results — Beginning of Retreat: Average score 60. End of Retreat: Average score 87. Net Change: +27.

Participants demonstrated a 27-point increase in perceived wellness following participation in the retreat experience.

This measurable improvement suggests that participants experienced greater emotional clarity, increased awareness of personal wellness needs, stronger feelings of connection and affirmation, and renewed focus on intentional well-being.

The observed score increase reflects the immediate positive impact of structured reflection, emotional processing, mindfulness, and community-centered wellness engagement.

Participant Reflections

Participants described the retreat experience as emotionally meaningful, reflective, and restorative. Reflections included:

“A moment to reflect and discover what you need and what you find important.”

“Everyone needs moments of clarity and self-reflection.”

“It was very important for our sisterhood.”

“This experience increased my joy.”

“Insightful and engaging.”

These reflections reinforce the value of creating intentional spaces that support emotional awareness, connection, affirmation, and collective wellness.

Discussion

The outcomes from the inaugural WenWell™ Wellness Retreat suggest that intentional wellness-centered experiences may positively influence emotional well-being, reflective awareness, connection, and perceived wellness among participants.

The substantial increase in WenWell™ Wellness Index scores following participation in the retreat demonstrates the potential value of integrating mindfulness, emotional intelligence, guided reflection, peer affirmation, and symbolic wellness practices within structured community experiences.

Participants consistently emphasized themes related to emotional clarity, joy, self-reflection, connection, and sisterhood.

These findings align with broader wellness perspectives emphasizing the importance of emotional awareness, intentional pause, mindfulness, and supportive interpersonal environments in promoting well-being and resilience.

The retreat additionally highlights the role organizations and communities may play in creating psychologically safe spaces that intentionally prioritize emotional restoration and collective wellness.

Conclusion

The inaugural WenWell™ Wellness Retreat demonstrated the value of creating intentional spaces where individuals can pause, reflect, reconnect, and strengthen emotional well-being through guided community-centered experiences.

Through activities grounded in emotional intelligence, mindfulness, reflective practice, affirmation, and intentional connection, participants experienced measurable positive shifts in perceived wellness and emotional awareness.

The retreat further demonstrated the potential of the WenWell™ framework to support wellness within organizations, leadership groups, professional communities, and community-centered environments seeking sustainable approaches to reflection, resilience, and emotional well-being.

The WenWell™ movement reinforces a central principle: Wellness is not simply individual self-care. Wellness is intentional community care.
